FOOTBALL: EPL RECORD BREAKER JAMIE VARDY

The England striker scored for the 11th consecutive game to beat Ruud van Nistelrooy's long-standing mark but the visitors drew level before the first half was out

Bastian Schweinsteiger cancelled out Jamie Vardy's record-breaking goal to ensure Leicester City and Manchester United shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening.

Vardy drew level with the 10-game mark established by United great Ruud van Nistelrooy when he netted at Newcastle United last week but the division's most miserly defence stood in the way of his landmark achievement.

It was breached after 24 minutes as, sporting gold boots, the England striker demonstrated the coolness and precision in front of goal that are quickly becoming his trademarks to put the hosts ahead.

On the stroke of half-time, Schweinsteiger's first goal for United cancelled out Vardy's 40th in Leicester colours to temper the party atmosphere and a cagey second half threw up few clear-cut chances.

The draw means Manchester City sit ahead of Leicester at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference, with United a point further back in third.

Shinji Okazaki replaced Leonardo Ulloa to join Vardy in the Leicester attack, while Paddy McNair and Michael Carrick returned from injuries as two of four changes made by United boss Louis van Gaal.

The home faithful roared in response to Vardy's every touch and his first opening came in the 13th minute when Carrick carelessly presented possession to his England team-mate, who found N'Golo Kante for a shot that was deflected behind.

United, operating with a 3-5-2 system, were controlled and methodical in their play and Wes Morgan blocked a strike from Schweinsteiger as the half reached its midway point.

Shortly afterwards, Leicester's contrasting approach heralded an historic moment.

Kasper Schmeichel claimed a United corner and threw the ball to Christian Fuchs. The Austria full-back charged over the halfway line on a rapid break to release Vardy with a measured pass from the right.

The man of the moment scampered clear and clipped a low finish beyond De Gea before embarking on an adrenaline-fuelled celebration as the King Power Stadium went wild.

Spurred on by their raucous fans, Leicester sought to press home their advantage and Riyad Mahrez completed a delicate one-two with Okazaki to force a sharp stop from De Gea.

United threatened sparingly but, after Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater headed nervously behind, they had an equaliser in first-half stoppage time.

Daley Blind delivered the resulting corner into a dangerous area and Schweinsteiger won his wrestling match with Okazaki to head home.

Four minutes into the second half, the Germany captain was afforded more space on the end of Juan Mata's free-kick but his headed attempt was too close to Schmeichel.

The first-half's earlier pattern re-emerged - United controlling possession before they were almost punished by another lightning Leicester break in the 66th minute.

Mahrez was the architect on this occasion and, with Ulloa and Vardy on his inside, he picked out the recently introduced substitute who could not match the top scorer's incisiveness as De Gea saved.

A striker experiencing contrasting fortunes to Vardy, Wayne Rooney, made way for Memphis Depay two minutes later following a lacklustre display.

Depay blazed over from close range in the 84th minute but former non-league man Vardy did not get the chance to add another twist to his fairytale before taking the acclaim of the stadium at the final whistle.

BREAKING NEWS: Thousands rally in UK and Spain against bombing Syria Protesters call on their respective countries not to get involved in Syria, as Paris attacks fuel political momentum.

Thousands of people have protested in London and Madrid against the potential participation of their respective countries in air strikes in Syria, as political momentum mounted to broaden the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

At least 5,000 people gathered in central London on Saturday, carrying placards reading "Don't bomb Syria", "Drop Cameron, not bombs" and "Don't add fuel to the fire."

"[Prime Minister] David Cameron's incoherent proposals for action in Syria will do nothing to weaken ISIL but will instead inflame the civil war, deepen the misery of the Syrian people and increase the terrorist risk," said the Stop the War Coalition protest movement.

Cameron on Thursday laid out the case for British fighter jets
, already bombing ISIL targets in Iraq, to join France, the US and others in targeting ISIL strongholds in neighbouring Syria.

A parliamentary vote on bombing Syria is expected as early as next week, and many formerly reluctant politicians are thought to have changed their minds after the Paris attacks earlier this month.

Also on Saturday, about 5,000 people demonstrated against potential Spanish involvement in the conflict, with protesters chanting "No to war" outside the Reina Sofia museum in the capital Madrid.

Protesters answered a "not in our name" petition from dozens of artists that has received about 34,000 online signatures to date, as European governments consider armed intervention.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who faces a December general election, said that he would hold off on any decision.

"Decisions have to be well thought through, as in any aspect of life," said Rajoy, who added Madrid was in touch with its allies pending a clear plan of action.

Rajoy's Popular Party is mindful of how in March 2004, under his predecessor Jose Maria Aznar, who had backed the US intervention in Iraq a year earlier, lost the general election which took place three days after 191 people were killed in a series of Madrid train bombings.

BREAKING NEWS: Turkey-Russia jet downing - Moscow announces sanctions

Russia has announced a package of economic sanctions against Turkey over the shooting down of a Russian jet on the Syrian border on Tuesday.

A decree signed by President Vladimir Putin (in Russian) covers imports from Turkey, the work of Turkish companies in Russia and any Turkish nationals working for Russian companies.

The decree also calls for an end to charter flights between the countries.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has refused to apologise to Russia.

On Friday, he accused Moscow of "playing with fire" in its Syria operations. But on Saturday, he said he was "saddened" by the downing of the jet.

Turkey and Russia have important economic links. Russia is Turkey's second-largest trading partner, while more than three million Russian tourists visited Turkey last year.

Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday that there were close to 90,000 Turkish nationals working in Russia. Taking family members into account, that figure rises to 200,000, he said.

The decree also urges Russian tour operators to refrain from selling packages to Turkey, while Turkey's Foreign Ministry has warned its citizens against non-essential travel to Russia "until the situation becomes clear".

How sanctions might affect Moscow shoppers

In fact, shoppers have already been affected.

Earlier this week, Russia's agriculture minister said that around 15% of Turkish produce did not meet Russian safety standards. Some imports were blocked, and trucks stranded at borders.

The new sanctions will mean some imports will be stopped - but it is not yet clear which.

Turkey has exported food and agricultural produce worth over €1bn (£702m) to Russia already this year, and Russia says 20% of its vegetable imports come from Turkey.

Turkey's Anadolu Agency says exports of leather, textiles and clothes to Russia were worth more than $1.52bn (£1bn) last year.

Russia mixes food and foreign policy

On Friday Russia suspended its visa-free arrangement with Turkey.

Mr Erdogan has asked for a meeting with Mr Putin, who wants an apology from Turkey before he will agree to talks.

Turkey says the Russian plane had intruded into its airspace and ignored warnings to leave.

But Moscow maintains that its SU-24 fighter jet was downed by a missile fired from a Turkish jet inside Syria.

Mr Putin has also firmly rejected any suggestion Turkey did not recognise the plane as Russian. He said it was easily identifiable and its co-ordinates had been passed on to Turkey's ally, the US.

Russia has sent troops and aircraft to Syria to back up the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad in the civil war.

Turkey, which is a member of Nato and of a US-led coalition in the region, insists Mr Assad must step down before any political solution to the Syrian conflict is found.

claimed the recent attacks on Paris, Ankara and also on a Russian airliner.

On Saturday, the Turkish president again defended the shooting down of the jet and criticised Russia's operations in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad, whom Ankara opposes.

But he renewed his call for a meeting with Mr Putin on the sidelines of the Paris Climate talks next week, saying that both sides should approach the issue more positively.

NEWS: Turkey-Russia jet downing: Turkey President Tayyip Erdogan 'saddened' over plane

Turkey's president has said he is "saddened" by the downing of a Russian combat jet by Turkish forces on the Syrian border last Tuesday.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wished the incident had not happened and hoped it would not happen again.

He has so far refused to apologise to Russia, accusing Moscow of "playing with fire" in its Syria operations.

The president's remarks came as Turkey warned its citizens against non-essential travel to Russia.

The Foreign Ministry said visits should be avoided "until the situation becomes clear", citing problems such as anti-Turkish demonstrations outside the country's embassy in Moscow.
On Friday Russia suspended its visa-free arrangement with Turkey and is planning to introduce a wide range of economic sanctions.

Mr Erdogan has asked for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but Mr Putin wants an apology from Turkey before he will agree to talks.

The Turkish president again defended the incident and criticised Russia's operations in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad, whom Ankara opposes.

But he renewed his call for a meeting with Mr Putin on the sidelines of the Paris Climate talks next week, saying that both sides should approach the issue more positively.

"We wish it hadn't happened, but it happened," he said, quoted by the Associated Press. "I hope something like this doesn't happen again."

Russia has sent troops and aircraft to Syria to back up the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad in the civil war.

Turkey, which is a member of Nato and of a US-led coalition in the region, insists Mr Assad must step down before any political solution to the Syrian conflict is found.

Both countries say they are trying to rid the region of the so-called Islamic State (IS) group, which claimed the recent attacks on Paris, Ankara and also on a Russian airliner.

And on Friday Russia said it had strengthened its anti-aircraft defences by moving a cruiser towards the coast and deploying new missiles at its main base.

The Moskva cruiser's long-range air defence system will provide cover for Russian aircraft, as will the S-400 missiles which arrived on Thursday.

Turkey says the Russian plane had intruded into its airspace and ignored warnings to leave.

Moscow maintains that the downed SU-24 fighter jet was downed by a missile fired from a Turkish jet inside Syria.

Mr Putin has also firmly rejected any suggestion Turkey did not recognise the plane as Russian. He said it was easily identifiable and its co-ordinates had been passed on to Turkey's ally, the US.

NEWS: JAPAN - Mystery ghost fleet containing 20 dead sailors washes up in Japan

A fleet of 11 ghost ships containing the rotting remains of at least 20 sailors has washed up on the Japanese coastline, sparking an investigation in the country. The mysterious ships have given rise to numerous conspiracy theories in the country, as authorities battle to discover the identities of the bodies.

Rescuers told Japanese broadcaster NHK that the bodies of 20 sailors were ‘badly decomposed’ and ‘skeleton-like’

Four of the ships washed up in early November, and seven more have been spotted in recent weeks drifting in the Sea of Japan.
The most recent, discovered on Tuesday, was found off the coast of Fukui, some 250 miles north of Tokyo.

It has been impossible to identify the bodies and authorities have no idea where they might have come from.
The only clues as to where the boats may have come from are a scrap of material that appears to have come from a North Korean flag, and writing on one of the boats that seems to read ‘Korean People’s Army’.

Some believe that the vessels are fishing boats from North Korea, as the nation is trying to expand its fishing industry to boost harvests.

NEWS: JAPAN - Japan to resume whaling in Antarctic despite court ruling

Japan has decided to resume hunting whales in the Antarctic after a break of more than a year.

The decision comes despite an International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling that Japan cease all whaling.

The Japanese fisheries agency said it would go ahead with a revised plan by the end of March next year.

Under this plan, it will reduce the number of minke whales being caught each year by two thirds to just over 300.

The Japanese authorities believe their plan is scientifically reasonable but it is likely to prompt international outrage.

Japan started its whaling programme in 1987, a year after an international moratorium was enacted.

The ICJ, which made its ruling in March last year, says Japan has caught some 3,600 minke whales since its current programme began in 2005.

TOUCHING STORY - Daughter moves wedding to dad's hospital room so he could be part of it

A North Carolina woman decided to hold her wedding in a hospital room so her terminally ill father could be a part of her big day.
Kaila Kirby, planned to tie the knot in July, but after her father's pulmonary fibrosis took a turn for the worse, she decided to improvise.

“I just kind of wanted my Dad to give me away on my wedding day,” Kalia Kirby told WBTV.
On Wednesday morning, Kaila Kirby and her fiancé Daniel Pardue stood beside Jubal Kirby’s hospital bed at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., and said their vows.

With only a few hours to prepare, hospital staff pulled together $45 in donations and bought fresh flowers and cake to celebrate the wedding, the Observer reported.
About 50 friends and relatives surrounded the couple as they tied the knot, according to the newspaper.

And while a wedding in a hospital room may seem rare, it wasn’t the first vow said in Jubal Kirby's hospital room this week.

Jubal Kirby married his daughter’s mother in a short ceremony last week, WBTV reported.

Jubal Kirby and Colleen were together for 26 years but did not decide to get married until it became clear how ill he was.
“He said he wanted to make an honest woman out of her,” Kaila’s older sister, Jessica Harrison, told the Observer.

NEWS: UK ON IS - Syria air strikes; Issue 'above party politics', says McDonnell

MPs should be able to follow their "own judgement" on possible air strikes over Syria, the shadow chancellor has said.

About a possible Commons vote to decide the issue, John McDonnell said: "There are some issues like going to war that should be above party politics."

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is opposed to air strikes in Syria against Islamic State (IS) militants - putting him at odds with much of his shadow cabinet.

French president Francois Hollande has called on MPs to support the action.

In Parliament on Thursday, Prime Minister David Cameron set out what he has called the "compelling case" for extending air strikes against IS from Iraq into Syria.

While making clear his personal opposition to the extension of air strikes, Mr McDonnell said the "horrendous mistake" of the Iraq war had been partly due to MPs being "whipped and threatened and pushed" into supporting "something many of them did not believe in".

Speaking on Radio he said: "There are some issues like going to war that should be above party politics, and I think we are moving to a situation where hopefully in all parties on issues like this a moral conscience should be above the whip as well.

"On certain issues, the ones really above party politics, we have got to have mature politics in our democracy now. This is a matter of conscience. You are sending people out possibly to die.

"There shouldn't be any party discipline on matters like this. You should follow your own judgement on what you think is best for the constituency and the country."

Survey of members

Senior shadow cabinet members have been seeking to defuse an internal party row over the issue, which threatens to split Labour.

Mr Corbyn faced warnings of resignations after he wrote to Labour MPs expressing his opposition to air strikes and rejecting the prime minister's case for military action.

The Labour leader has sent out a survey to party members asking for their views and urging them to respond by the start of next week.

He has also told his MPs to go back to their constituencies this weekend and canvas the views of members.

Report says Mr Corbyn's supporters are "convinced that his views are closer to Labour's grass roots than those of dissenting MPs".

Report adds: "His opponents suspect him of trying to bypass the parliamentary party, and appeal directly to the members who elected him in such numbers in September, before he returns to face Labour's shadow cabinet on Monday."

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson said shadow cabinet members who disagreed with Mr Corbyn's position would not be resigning.

Mr Watson hinted a free vote - allowing the shadow cabinet and Labour MPs to vote as they please - might be the best way out of the situation.
Growing 'momentum'

It is understood senior government ministers, including Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, will ring Labour MPs over the weekend to press the case for action.

Mr Hammond said there was growing "momentum" among MPs in support of extending RAF air strikes against IS into Syria.

He said ministers would give MPs the chance to reflect over the weekend on Mr Cameron's case before deciding whether to press for a Commons vote.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta, Mr Hollande thanked the UK for its support in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this month.

He said: "I do hope that the House of Commons will be able to meet the request of Prime Minister Cameron."

Mr Cameron has vowed to hold a Commons vote on joining air strikes in Syria when he is confident he can win it, which could depend on persuading enough Labour MPs to back his case to counter any Conservative rebellion.

BREAKING NEWS: Colorado Springs - Three killed in shooting at Planned Parenthood clinic

Three people have died after a man exchanged gunfire with police from inside a birth control clinic in the US city of Colorado Springs, police say.

One police officer and two civilians were killed, Mayor John Suthers said. Several other people were injured.

A male suspect was taken into custody after a stand-off with police lasting hours at the Planned Parenthood clinic.

A number of people were trapped inside the clinic while the stand-off with police took place.

Authorities say the motive for the incident is unclear.Officials said earlier that 11 people, five of them police officers, had been wounded but it is not clear if the fatalities came from that number.

All roads around the area were closed, the city's police said in a tweet.
The manager of a nearby hair salon, Denise Speller, said she had heard as many as 20 gunshots in under five minutes.

She told a local newspaper she had seen one of two police officers appear to fall to the ground and the other attempt to get the wounded officer behind their police vehicle.

Police had told shoppers at a nearby centre to stay indoors.

In a statement, Planned Parenthood said it was not yet clear "if Planned Parenthood was in fact the target of this attack".

"Our concern is for the safety of our patients, staff and law enforcement," said its CEO Vicki Cowart.

New York's city police said it had deployed critical response vehicles to Planned Parenthood sites in the city because of the Colorado incident, but said there was no threat in the city.

Planned Parenthood is a healthcare non-profit-making group with 59 affiliates and 700 clinics around the US, some of which provide abortion services.

The group has faced numerous protests from those opposed to abortion.

NEWS: Turkey-Russia jet downing - Moscow beefs up defences in Syria

Russia has strengthened its anti-aircraft defences in Syria by moving a cruiser towards the coast and deploying new missiles at its main base.

The Moskva cruiser's long-range air defence system will provide cover for Russian aircraft, as will the S-400 missiles which arrived on Thursday.

The row over Turkey's downing of a Russian combat jet on Tuesday rages on.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned Russia not to "play with fire" with its operations in Syria.

Russia has suspended its visa-free arrangement with Turkey and is planning to introduce a wide range of economic sanctions. President Vladimir Putin wants an apology from Turkey before he will speak to Mr Erdogan.

Moscow rejected Turkey's assertion that its SU-24 fighter jet had flown into Turkish air space for 17 seconds after ignoring repeated warnings to change course.

A senior Russian commander said the jet had in fact been "ambushed" by two Turkish F-16s patrolling the area for more than an hour beforehand.

He said Russian and Syrian radar data proved that a Turkish jet had fired a missile from 2km (1.2 miles) inside Syria. Turkey did not respond to the allegation.

The long-range S-400 system was delivered to Russia's Hmeimim air base just 50km from the border with Turkey.

Russian aircraft have been using the base to attack opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since 30 September.

Turkey, which is a member of Nato and of a US-led coalition in the region, insists Mr Assad must step down before any political solution to the Syrian conflict is found.

Both countries say they are trying to rid the region of the so-called Islamic State (IS) group, which claimed the recent attacks on Paris and also on a Russian airliner.
'Playing with fire'

In a televised speech, Mr Erdogan warned Russia it was "playing with fire to attack the Syrian opposition, who have international legitimacy, under the pretext of fighting against Daesh [another name for IS]".

He accused Moscow of seeking to use the downing of the jet as an "excuse to make unacceptable accusations against us", and accused Russians of "mistreating" Turkish citizens who were in the country for a trade fair.

Mr Erdogan said he hoped to meet Mr Putin face to face on the sidelines of the climate summit in Paris next week "to bring the issue to a reasonable point. We are disturbed that the issue has been escalated".

While he has refused to apologise, Mr Erdogan did say on Thursday that had Turkey known the plane was Russian, "maybe we would have warned it differently".

But Mr Putin has firmly rejected any suggestion Turkey did not recognise the plane as Russian. He said it was easily identifiable and its co-ordinates had been passed on to Turkey's ally, the US.

President Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said the Kremlin had received Mr Erdogan's request for a meeting but he would not say whether such a meeting was possible.

"We have seen that the Turkish side hasn't been ready to offer an elementary apology over the plane incident," he said.

Announcing the suspension of a visa-free travel regime with Turkey from 1 January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he believed the Turkish leadership had "crossed the line of what is acceptable".

Russia on Thursday said it was drafting a wide-ranging list of economic sanctions against Turkey that would hit food imports and joint investment projects among other things.

Turkey and Russia have important economic links. Russia is Turkey's second-largest trading partner, while more than three million Russian tourists visited Turkey last year.

FOOTBALL: Mourinho dismisses Drogba comments - He's just trying to sell books

The Ivorian had suggested there was a lack of "big characters" in the dressing room at Stamford Bridge but his former coach has accused him of stoking up controversy.

Jose Mourinho has dismissed comments from Didier Drogba suggesting Chelsea lack leadership, accusing his former striker of making controversial statements in order to sell books.

Drogba, who is promoting his autobiography, said in an interview that the Chelsea dressing room was full of "big names, big players and big characters" during his time at the club.

The Ivorian pointed out that only John Terry remained at Stamford Bridge from that group and called for other players to develop a similar mentality.

"When you speak because you want to sell books, I don’t read," Mourinho told reporters on Friday. "I don’t read.

"I like good interviews. I like interviews from big guys like Didier with good journalists, newspapers or television. But this is not an interview. It was to sell books.

"It doesn’t disappoint me. It was just the reality. It was just to sell books. I can analyse Didier’s interview with pleasure, but not Didier selling books."
