The actor, who had charmed his way into millions of hearts with his scintillating debut in 1973’s ‘Bobby’, had been ailing for a while.
After being diagnosed with cancer in 2018, he underwent treatment in New York for almost a year. In September 2019, he returned to India but was rarely seen in public since.
On Wednesday morning, the actor was admitted to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai after he complained of uneasiness.
Following his death, the Kapoor family issued an official statement detailing his final hours in the hospital before he passed on.
“Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last.”“He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him,” it further said.“He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears,” it was revealed.“In this hour of personal loss, we also recognise the world is going through a very difficult and troubled time. There are numerous restrictions around movement and gathering in public. We would like to request all his fans and well-wishers and friends of the family to please respect the laws that are in force. He would not have it any other way,” the statement read.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was “anguished” by the demise of Rishi Kapoor.
Taking to Twitter, PM Modi recalled Kapoor’s passion for cinema, and referred to him as a powerhouse of talent.
“Multifaceted, endearing and lively…this was Rishi Kapoor Ji. He was a powerhouse of talent. I will always recall our interactions, even on social media. He was passionate about films and India’s progress. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti,” he wrote.
