Nigeria - Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said the use of face masks in public places will be enforced across the state.
The governor announced this on Tuesday as well as partial lifting of ban on movement in a state-wide broadcast.
The partial lifting of movement, he said, will begin tomorrow.
According to him, security agents are to enforce the wearing of the face masks in public areas as well as apply sanctions against defaulters.
“In view of the foregoing, it has become necessary to partially lift the ban on movements within the state, effective Thursday, April 30, 2020. This is to enable our people engage in economic/business activities between the hours of 6 a.m and 7 p.m,” he said.
The governor said the lockdown period enabled the state government to break the chain of transmission while also assisting in “tracing, identifying, isolating and testing contacts of infected persons”.
He said schools, recreational centres and sporting activities in the state will remain closed till May 31.
Also, the Abia State government yesterday inaugurated a special COVID-19 mobile court to try violators of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s directives on COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
The inauguration was held on the premises of the State High Court in Umuahia, the state capital.
The state’s Chief Judge, Justice Onuoha Ogwe, who inaugurated the mobile court, said it would hand down non-custodian sentences.
He urged the court to concentrate on violators of COVID-19 law.
The chief judge advised magistrates of mobile courts to impose reasonable fine or community service against offenders, adding that the government’s focus is respect for its laws.
Magistrate Lawrence Okite of Ohafia Zone promised that the magistrates would discharge their responsibilities in accordance with government’s guideline.
Magistrate Emmanuel Ukaegbu will be in-charge of Aba Zone while Chuks Nwankpa will be in-charge of Umuahia Zone.
