Unknown gunmen have reportedly killed two policemen and two staff of the United States Consulate during an attack along Atani, Osamale road in Ogbaru LGA of Anambra State.
The US Embassy staff were said to be on a humanitarian mission in the area when the gunmen ambushed their convoy and shot four people dead at about 3:30pm on Tuesday, May 16.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement said the police engaged the hoodlums in a shoot-out, adding that two security operatives were abducted.
According to him, “The joint security forces have embarked on a rescue/recovery operation in Ogbaru LGA, following an attack on a convoy of staff of U.S. Consulate on May 15, 2023, by 3:30 p.m. along Atani-Osamale Road.
Also, the arsonist/murderers on sighting the responding joint security forces, abducted two police operatives, the driver of the second vehicle and took to their heels. No U S citizen was in the convoy.”
Meanwhile, John Kirby, the spokesperson for the National Security Council, confirmed the tragic incident during a White House press briefing on Tuesday.
